Why Private Instagram Posts Can’t Be Downloaded
Private accounts, Stories and Highlights stay private. Why, why logging in to a downloader is a bad idea, and what you can do.

“Paste a link, get the video” works for public posts, but not for everything on Instagram. If IG Downloader tells you a post or Story can’t be downloaded, here is why, and why that’s actually a protection for you too.
The short answer
A downloader can only fetch what anyone could see without logging in. Instagram shows public Reels and posts to everyone, but keeps other content behind a login:
| Content | Visible without logging in? | Downloadable? |
|---|---|---|
| Public Reels, videos, photos, carousels | Yes | Yes |
| Posts from private accounts | No, only approved followers | No |
| Stories | No | No |
| Highlights | No | No |
| Close Friends content | No | No |
| Direct messages | No | No |
| Live videos | No | No |
Why not just log in?
Some tools ask for your Instagram username and password so they can fetch private content “as you”. Never do this:
- Your account is at risk. You’re handing your password to a stranger’s server.
- Instagram may lock or ban your account for automated access.
- It breaks other people’s privacy. Private accounts and Stories exist because people chose a limited audience.
IG Downloader never asks for any login, and never will.
How to tell whether a post is public
- Open the link in a private/incognito browser window. If you can see the post without logging in, it’s public.
- On a profile, a padlock and “This account is private” mean the posts are for followers only.
Your own private content
If you want copies of your own posts, Stories and Highlights, Instagram has an official export:
- Go to Settings → Accounts Center → Your information and permissions.
- Choose Download your information, select your Instagram account and the content you want.
- Instagram emails you a link to a file with your photos and videos in their original quality.
For Stories, you can also turn on Settings → Archiving and downloads → Save story to archive so every Story is kept in your archive.
A friend’s private post
If a friend shared something with their followers and you’d like a copy, ask them to send you the file. It will be better quality than any download, and it respects their choice of audience.
Other reasons a public post fails
- The post was deleted or the account was deactivated.
- The account is age-restricted or limited to certain countries.
- The link points to a profile rather than a post: copy the link of the specific post or Reel. See how to download Instagram Reels without an app for where to find it.
For everything public, IG Downloader saves HD videos, audio and full-size photos in any browser.
